I would start with the SoFi Credit Card's ongoing reward rate before assigning any value to its extras. Greater Than Enough's review, published on January 3, 2024, described unlimited 2% cashback with no annual fee. Those are historical terms, not a current offer to rely on without checking the agreement.

What the SoFi Credit Card offered

The base rewards applied across purchases, so there was no favored spending category to track. Each dollar charged earned two reward points, and each point was worth one cent through the stated redemption options. That made the base rate easier to compare with other flat-rate cards.

Category-based rewards require attention to where spending qualifies. With a flat rate, the comparison starts with ordinary purchases rather than an effort to match each purchase to a rewarded category. That is useful for understanding the offer, though it does not settle the cost of using credit.

Cashback and borrowing costs still need separate calculations. Rewards describe what comes back from eligible spending; interest is what you pay for carrying debt. An easy-to-understand reward rate does not establish whether borrowing on the card makes sense.

The product webpage used a new name, the SoFi Unlimited 2% Credit Card, while the creator called it the SoFi Credit Card. It was a World Elite Mastercard. Mastercard connects participating businesses and financial institutions for payments; that network name and benefits tier do not, by themselves, identify the legal lender.

I would compare the ordinary offer first, then consider extras that fit existing habits. A temporary boost expires, and a subscription perk has little value if it requires spending on a service you would otherwise skip.

Feature Terms described Condition or distinction
Annual fee No annual fee Separate from borrowing costs
Base purchase rewards Unlimited 2% cashback Two points per dollar, valued at one cent each
Foreign transaction fee Zero Separate from currency conversion
SoFi Plus boost An extra 1% for 12 months Direct deposit into SoFi; up to $12,000 of spending

How points became usable cash

Redemption destinations included SoFi checking, savings and brokerage accounts. Cardholders could also apply rewards as a card statement credit or toward SoFi student loans and personal loans. A statement credit reduces the amount owed on the card, while a bank deposit puts money into a deposit account. Check how a reward credit affects payment obligations rather than assuming it replaces a required payment.

Points became available roughly a day or two after transactions posted, according to the creator. Posting means a charge has moved beyond its initial authorization and become a recorded transaction on the account. Earning rewards on a purchase therefore did not mean having cash available at the moment of payment.

I read the claim of instant redemption as access to points already available. The creator reported redeeming just several points to confirm there was no minimum threshold. That was their experience, not a test I performed.

An example showed 916 points redeemed to a bank account for $9.16. For an infrequent card user, the absence of a minimum matters: a small reward balance can be used rather than left waiting until enough spending accumulates.

Direct redemption to an outside financial institution was unavailable. The creator suggested redeeming into SoFi banking and then transferring the money elsewhere, a process they described as easy. I would still count the extra account relationship as part of the arrangement, even if it suited them.

Someone who already uses the destination account has a different practical choice from someone opening it solely to receive rewards. In the latter case, getting cashback where it is wanted involves another transfer, rather than a direct redemption to the outside institution.

The temporary boost needed separate arithmetic

Direct deposit into SoFi qualified users for SoFi Plus under the terms described. That brought an extra 1% for 12 months on up to $12,000 of spending. Added to the base rate, it produced a 3% return during the qualifying period.

The additional reward was $120 when the full eligible spending amount received the boost. That figure was the bonus portion alone. The cap limited the temporary increase, not the unlimited base cashback, and spending beyond it would not increase the capped bonus.

I would distinguish someone already receiving qualifying direct deposit from someone who would need to move it. Changing a routine banking arrangement takes effort even when there is no advertised price. Nor would I count extra spending as a way to benefit: an unnecessary purchase still costs substantially more than its cashback.

SoFi Travel offered a separate 3% cashback rate on bookings, including flights, rental cars and hotels. It depended on booking through that platform. The total price and reservation terms matter alongside the percentage returned.

For travel portals generally, cancellation arrangements and responsibility for booking problems can affect how useful the service is. I would read those terms before valuing the reward. A higher rate is only useful when the booking suits the trip and its price compares favorably with other available options.

The portal offer and the direct-deposit offer also belong in different parts of a comparison. One concerns where a reservation is made; the other concerns eligibility for a time-limited increase. Treating either as the permanent rate would obscure the conditions that make it available.

Fees, foreign spending and the cost of borrowing

The creator considered the lack of annual and foreign transaction fees attractive compared with other flat-rate cashback cards, particularly for international spending. That was their assessment of the competitive field at publication, not a current ranking.

An annual fee is a recurring cost of holding a card. A foreign transaction fee is a different charge that can apply to qualifying purchases involving foreign merchants or currencies. Removing those charges does not establish the full cost of borrowing or accessing cash.

I would be careful with the phrase "zero-fee card." The specific claims concerned annual and foreign transaction fees, not every possible transaction. The review did not establish the legal issuer, geographic eligibility or verification requirements, or a complete schedule of issuing, monthly, top-up, currency-conversion and ATM charges and limits.

Before relying on an offer, check the current application and card agreement. Currency conversion needs attention even when the card has no foreign transaction fee: a merchant or ATM may offer to convert a transaction into your home currency. Examine the displayed amount and conversion terms rather than assuming that offer is favorable.

Cash access also differs from an ordinary purchase. Credit cards generally apply separate borrowing rules to cash advances, and fees or interest can make them expensive. The purchase reward structure should not be assumed to apply to cash access.

For me, repayment costs matter more than optimizing cashback. Interest on a carried balance can outweigh rewards. A card with no annual fee can still be expensive when used for ongoing borrowing, so compare the reward after the costs of actual use.

Credit purchases and crypto-funded spending work differently

This was a conventional cashback credit card: purchases created debt to repay, and rewards were points with a cash redemption value. A brokerage account was among the redemption destinations, but that reference alone was no basis for assuming crypto top-ups, automatic coin sales or a wallet connection.

A crypto-funded payment arrangement may sell or transfer digital assets to support spending. The checkout experience can look familiar while the source of funds and the risks differ. A top-up usually moves funds into an account before spending, unlike a credit purchase made against a borrowing limit.

That difference matters when reading payment-product descriptions. Money deposited in advance and money borrowed for a purchase create different obligations. I would establish which funds support the transaction before trying to compare rewards or account features.

In a custodial arrangement, a provider controls the assets or the credentials needed to move them. With self-custody, the user controls the private key, the secret that authorizes transactions. Card branding does not establish either arrangement, and redeeming cashback is different from controlling a crypto wallet.

Spending crypto can count as a taxable sale in many countries, even for an everyday purchase. Treatment depends on the jurisdiction and transaction, which makes records of purchases, disposals and costs important. Crypto prices can also change between acquiring an asset and spending it.

Custodial services create dependence on the provider's access controls and withdrawal processes. Self-custody instead requires careful protection of signing credentials. I would keep those risks separate from the terms of an ordinary cashback card rather than compare the products on reward percentages alone.

Benefits had conditions beyond the headline

The World Elite Mastercard perks covered services such as rides and deliveries, as well as shopping benefits. Their value depended on using the relevant services and meeting the conditions, rather than merely holding the card.

Lyft offered a $5 monthly credit after three rides. Instacart offered two complimentary months of Instacart Plus and $10 off a second monthly order. That second-order requirement mattered: it was not a discount available on any order.

I would value these against spending that would happen anyway. Taking extra rides or placing an unnecessary delivery order to earn a credit can increase the total bill. A usable perk and a saving are different things if the perk changes what someone buys.

Other benefits included monthly Peacock discounts of $3 or $5, depending on the plan, and a ShopRunner membership with free two-day delivery and returns at participating retailers. These were discounts for particular services, not cash available to spend anywhere.

Complimentary subscription periods need a check of what happens afterward and whether continued use requires a paid membership. A service can be useful during a free period without being worth keeping once its promotional terms change.

I would also allow for the work of tracking monthly qualifications against billing periods and service rules. Adding every perk's maximum face value would overstate the card's value for someone who cannot use them all. The relevant saving is the spending a benefit removes, not the total of the advertised credits.

Phone protection needed a closer reading

Cellular phone insurance covered theft or damage, with up to $1,000 annually. The stated limits also included an $800 ceiling per claim and a maximum of two claims per year. These limits applied together.

A per-claim ceiling restricts payment for an individual incident; the annual ceiling restricts the total over the coverage period. Two allowable claims therefore did not mean both could receive the full per-claim amount if that would exceed the annual maximum.

I would read the protection terms before relying on the largest number. Insurance generally depends on eligibility and covered events, as well as evidence supporting the claim. The maximum is an upper boundary, not a promise of reimbursement after any loss.

For card-linked phone protection, the benefits guide is where to check phone-bill requirements, any deductible and the claim process. Ownership documents and records of the circumstances of a loss may matter. Those are general insurance precautions, not additional terms asserted for this card.

The benefits page also listed Zero Fraud Liability Protection and ID Theft Protection. Their names identify types of assistance, but the underlying terms determine what they cover. Neither fraud protection nor insurance makes every transaction risk-free.

I would still check statements promptly and report unfamiliar charges. Protecting login credentials and verifying messages that request account information remain necessary habits. A rewards account is a financial account even when its balance is small.

Compare the agreement with how you would use the card

Greater Than Enough's case for keeping the card rested on flat-rate rewards, accessible redemption and foreign-spending terms. The creator's positive view of SoFi banking also explained why an internal redemption destination was acceptable to them. That preference need not suit someone who wants a different banking relationship.

I would begin a current comparison by tracing an ordinary purchase through the agreement, from the charge to repayment and reward redemption. Establish what is owed and when payment is due. Then check where the reward can go, including whether access requires an account you would otherwise have no reason to hold.

Temporary offers belong in that comparison only for their qualifying period. Portal rewards depend on the booking channel, while service credits depend on the relevant activity. Benefits that require a change in spending deserve more scrutiny than discounts on purchases already planned.

For someone expecting to carry debt, borrowing costs take priority over rewards. For travel use, conversion choices and the terms for purchases abroad deserve attention. Anyone comparing a crypto payment card needs to establish how it is funded first. I would settle those questions before assigning value to a bonus or a benefit with an $800 per-claim ceiling.
